As for now, my physical training is on the down-low. It's been determined that there's a bulging disc in my L4-5, which is pushing on my nerves, causing diminished reflex/reaction on my right side. I will know more of what's goin on, as a whole, soon. There will be a determination on whether it's surgery or shots. This is going to be a process of re-building on a very serious level. I can do ... squats, right now....but I'm definitely on lifting restrictions and wear a back brace, faithfully, just to provide a small amount of relief. ![]() Hopefully, with my visits to the neurologist & neuro surgeon, we'll find out more of what may be going on with my thoracic as well, which started the whole realization that there is something wrong with my back. The day of the CT on my thoracic, it was fine so they found nothing at that time. Every little piece of training, will be posted in my journal for progression to be shown. I miss the gym and training. But right now sitting, standing in one position for more than 2 min. or laying for too long, hurt. If I keep moving and busy, it keeps my mind off the hurting (though is still hurts...it keeps my mind off it). ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! The visit to the neurologist was cruddy. He used a pin to prick my left foot and it hurt like hell. BUT... he used that same pin on my right foot...and I felt NOTHING sharp. I could feel him touching my foot but I couldn't feel the pain of the pin prick to my foot. So, this coming week, I go for and EMG or EMB or whatever the hell it is, to determine how bad my nerves are bein pressed on. I'm bothered by this little pain factor... On top of this mess, my fuckin thoracic is swollen again. The pain when my thoracic swells and work on rolling my vertibrate is a nightmare with NO relief. Hydrocodone & Tylenol or Ibuprofen do NOTHING for the pain. So I'm hurtin pretty bad right now. On the bright side... I've been creating training plans & helping on the nutrition plans a lot, lately. It just makes me miss really training people in the gym. Sometime, this coming week, I take on a new client with MS. We'll see how it goes since he's stubborn as a mule. ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! With two doc's who say that "back surgery" is going to be what I will need... I am sent to a neuro surgeon who says "There's nothing wrong or not enough to warrant surgery"... well... now it's off to find an orthopedic surgeon since there is NO WAY IN HELL he can say there is nothing wrong with the pain that exists and the fact that two other doc's have said, "surgery." The neuro surgeon had me do squats & touch my toes... I sat down and looked right at him. I said,"You're not gonna see anything by having me do either of those things because I don't use my back for things! I still have a core." He dismissed me and all it did was piss me off. But I did laying legs & squats, along with modified push ups, the other day. It felt good. The push ups hurt my thoracic later... ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! USGI- AFR, Wife, Mom, EMT-B, NA/R, PCT, FT, IBO |

At 139.2 # and 21.5% bf ... I want to drop only 4.2 # & 6.5% bf. It's gonna take some work. I guess, I wouldn't have guessed my % would have been so high...so it was a little bummer, this morning. ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! Ok... day 1, Simply breaking in new training. I have to be very cautious of EVERY DAMN THING I do concerning my back. Reverse crunches on the cement floor was a little too much on my back bone. So just one set of 10, on a fully tender back bone. 2 sets of 15 on laying legs lifts with 5# on each ankle. My ass needs the work, so this was good. 2 sets of 15, squats with 10# curls. I MISS THESE. 1 set of 10 plie squats with isolated curl. I used to curl 30#, so I've got work to do but I'm startin very very light & low. I need to work my muscles back into this. As well, my back is a serious player in everything until we can find out what the hell is wrong with my backbone. It's more than just my thoracic & a bulging disc. My entire back bone hurts and is tender, most of the time. I find it to be a waste of time to go to the gym until I'm back up and lifting normal/high weight. Once I've re-conditioned myself, then I'll go back to the gym. ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! That sounds a bit scary with the spinal issue. Can you do SLDLs? Or lie on your belly and do hyperextensions? |

It is scary, Kap. I've been through a living hell due to this back issue... I am startin my training slow so I don't hurt myself more. Still more doctor visits to go to figure it all out... BUT, I cannot and will not remain "training free." I miss my weights and was in such a good mood, yesterday, after training. It may have been little weights but it was moving forward again.

Last night, no training, at all. I did NOT feel good...and around 0100 hrs this morning... "Holy Hannah!!!!" My body hurt in so many places/ways. Night before last, Mother, literally, kicked me to get me into gear. 2 sets 20 leg raises (side) with 10# on my ankles Sets split with Ab Tri Sets @ 15 ct. (Again, reverse crunches w/ ankle weights, NOT a good idea with my current back condition ) >> I'm an idiot. 2 sets of 15 modified push ups Sets split with back extensions, which I felt in my lumbar 2 sets of 15 squats w/ 10# curls, split with Plie squats w/ 10# muscle isolation. The goal is to re-strengthen my back slowly. Re-gain strength and shape in my arms and Re-Shape my ass, gaining the muscle strength and shape in my legs. Modified push ups slowly gaining, without pushing myself to the point that my thoracic muscle really acts up. NOT YET. So, it will stay very low # and amount. ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! USGI- AFR, Wife, Mom, EMT-B, NA/R, PCT, FT, IBO |

Is the thoracic muscle the diaphragm for breathing? Or is that an upper back muscle? |

This afternoon...BEFORE Supper.... I came home from work, in pain, but: 2 sets of 15 seated knees alternate with 2 sets of modified push ups 2 sets of 10 shoulder press with 20# db (first set with 10 ct iso) alternate with 2 sets of lats iso w/ 6# Though modified, damn push ups hurt. Thoracic is holdin up ok, for now. Lumbar, not so hot. It hurt like a bitch and i wanted to crumble... but I finished. That's all for today due to extent of pain. Looking forward to lengthy training tomorrow, pain or not. ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! Keepin it simple... my right shoulder hurts... 2 sets of 20 Modified push ups alternate with 2 sets of 10 seated knees. (I slowed them to a much slower pace, hence, only 10 count). 2 sets of 15 count (side) leg lifts with 10#. My ass is screamin at me for doing such things to it. ![]() 2 sets of butt kicks with mid air 10 count. 1 set of lunges to see how it would go. It'll be good to get past the small stuff... ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! USGI- AFR, Wife, Mom, EMT-B, NA/R, PCT, FT, IBO |

In attempt to relaxe my back muscles & provide some relief, a good friend of mine has opened up the use of his hot tub, whenever I so-choose. So, Friday, I sat in the hot tub for an hour & afterwards, he put a powerful massage factor along my backbone. He felt in two areas where my backbone bulges. On Saturday night, we sat in the hot tub for nearly an hour and a half with the jets directly on my back. It feels great. Then, Evan did his pressure filled massage along my backbone and on my thoracic, for which he felt the muscle that had me nearly in tears... Any Pain Meds have been decreased by half or better due to the muscle relaxation treatments. I still have to have my doc reschedule a specialist visit for further determination as to what's going on, since it's my entire backbone. Today, I will work on stretches and ab exercises. ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! Never would I recommend an ab-roller to any client. You guys know how I am with some of the "paid programming" advertisements. However, today, an ab-roller showed up on the door step. My mother is "disabled" due to back/neck issues sustained at work 6 or 7 years ago. So all of her training is modified to fit her so she doesn't have to use her left arm/shoulder. The ab-roller seems good for her. She didn't hold onto the handles and I explained to her how to breathe to use her stomach muscles more correctly. She's worked really hard not to Look like a grandma, though she is. I was kind of mocking the thing (go figure)... but it was nice to use, for the purpose of not hurting my backbone. I'm going to try it for a week and see how it goes all week. I've always had issues with things like this because of the tension that is released from actually using all of the correct muscles. However, there are ways of increasing the tension so I'm going to give it a shot and see how it goes. Wish me luck. I just need to watch the pain/pressure in my backbone. ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! Well... ummmm... I only did 2 sets of 30 on the ab-roller... my backbone burns like a bitch now. I was almost in tears just gettin down to lay flat, to start. My mother watched as tears streamed when I did 2 sets of leg raises (on back). This morning was torture. I have to talk to doc and get that apt made with the next specialist.... Later, I will do Arm's & Leg's. If y'all have Facebook, go check out my BFL pics. The newest two, I tried posting on here but haven't figured out yet... In the pic, I kinda had help before I even started. LOL! ------- -------------------->> Where there's a will, there is Most Certainly a way. > No Pain, No Gain! I don't know if you mentioned it, but what happened to your spine in the first place? Does it excuse you at least temporarily from military service? What is you facebook contact info? |

At this point, the doc thinks that the car accident I was in while stationed down in Ohio is what has exasserbated everything since then. These kind of injuries are not always found right away but if it did something that 's why everything has seemed worse than it normally would. No, I'm not totally excused from military duty. I can't fly, right now because I'm a flying med tech and my duty cannot be fulfilled right now but there is plenty of other things I need to keep moving forward on. Once you've enlisted in the military, it is a govt. contract. AND I don't want to be excused from military duty. My military stance is very important to me. Last night, I did 4 sets of 15 on the ab roller. Didn't feel too bad. And did two sets of 10 seated knees. I could feel the seated knees all the way up into my shoulders. Wasn't the worst but it hurt.

would stability ball work do any good? Or is the ab roller sort of an 'easy' way to get some exercise when you are keeping an eye on your spine? Just a thought, what about ball hyperextensions, or is that not realistic? |
