What is interesting mostly about this story is the ethicist's concern that being able to prevent birth defects will harden society against those who are already born, as though they ought to be eliminated or at least ostracized in some way.

I think if you made it out of the womb alive, then you are alive. If I was to have a severe form of cystic fibrosis, for example, and was selected out by let's say my parents not having children, I would never notice myself missing.
